External attacks on internet connected machines is on the increase, and the best way to protect yourself against attack is to install a firewall. Because the internet is a public network, any connected computer can find and connect to any other connected computer. A firewall acts as a barrier between the public internet and your private computer or network and blocks potential threats. Depending on your connection and network setup, you may require a software firewall, or a hardware firewall.
A firewall protects you against a number of different online threats:
- Hackers breaking into your computer.
- Some viruses, called “worms,” that spread from computer to computer over the internet.
- Some firewalls block outgoing traffic that might originate from a virus infection.
Sometimes a firewall can be hosted on your server that is connecting you to the internet, sometimes it is better to have the gateway/firewall totally seperate to your server on a dedicated machine.
